How I became a Healer and Why We All Need to Heal
When I was 5 years old, I had a couple of experiences that led me to believe that my destiny was to be a healer when I grew up. One experience involved my mother, who I nursed for long periods of time while she laid in bed with horrible gallbladder attacks; the other one involved an ant. Yes, an ant. Even at that early age, I honored all life forms and when I accidentally stepped on an ant and it was still alive, but crumpled up, I picked it up, held it in my cupped hands and willed it to recover, which it did. I clearly remember thinking that maybe I would be a healer when I grew up.
The message came to me again when I was 22. I was going through a very difficult time. One day, during this period, I was taking a walk and I sat on a rock overlooking the Pacific Ocean and started crying. In my misery I said out loud, “God, why is this happening to me?” and a voice inside my head said, “So that you’ll have compassion.” In that moment, I knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that one day I would be helping people heal.
Ten years later, I started taking classes in alternative healing modalities of all kinds. I was determined to heal myself and others, because I was acutely aware of other people’s suffering and very much wanted to help them, as well as myself. (Through classes, workshops and the many books I read, I came to the realization that it is Spirit that heals and those of us who are called to be healers are actually conduits.)
Now here we are, in the 21st century, in a huge global mess and many people are in a panic over what is happening and having anxiety attacks. But from an astrological viewpoint, what is happening is exactly what is supposed to be happening. I explain why in the blog titled “What the Astrology says about Current Events”. You’ll find it in the Menu. But now I want to talk about why it’s important for you to heal at this time.
With all that is happening with climate change and the wild actions of our national government, it is totally understandable that you are having a hard time dealing with it all. It can be overwhelming to listen to the news, or even just read about it. People’s nervous systems are getting fried. We need to do anything and everything we can to be in a state of calm coherence. If some unexpected calamity should occur, it is absolutely vital that you remain clear headed so you are able to react to the event from a place of empowerment.
If you’ve experienced some past trauma, and so few people haven’t, your response to a present traumatic event could cause you to lose your head and freak out. Doing so, will keep you from responding in a helpful manner.
So the more you can heal your past traumas, the stronger the likelihood that you will always do the right thing.
Of course there is a good chance that no cataclysmic event occurs where you live, but you might be having a hard time dealing with other devastating life events, such as being left by your life partner, illness, loss of job security, not being able to make ends meet or having to move out of your home. Here’s the thing. The likelihood of any of these things happening are greatly reduced if you’ve healed a lot of your trauma. Here’s why.
People who have had big trauma in their lives and who haven’t resolved their issues, to some degree at least, are stressed out a lot; they have a lot of concerns. They are always on the lookout for some bad thing to happen again. They repeat old, harmful patterns because they think that trauma, drama and stress are normal parts of life. They don’t know that having a happy, healthy life is available to them, because that has never been their experience. But the truth is that we are all meant to live beautiful, abundant and joyful lives.
